POP:  Post Office Protocol, allows you to download your Gmail inbox messages from Gmail's server to your computer using Microsoft outlook, Thunderbird or other such program. user can access emails from desktop even if not connected to the internet.

IMAP: Internet messaging Access protocol, allows the user to download emails from Gmail's servers to the user's computer using some program like Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple mail etc, sounds similar to POP, well its not because IMAP provides two-way communication between your Gmail on the web and your email account.

Enabling IMAP, user can access Gmail from any device, mobile, office pc, and finally at home. It is comparatively a better option to use IMAP than POP, since using the POP method increase the risk of downloading same messages multiple times and even losing messages , on the other hand due to two-way sync capability of IMAp between your web Gmail and your Email Client on desktop it ensures that same emails are not downloaded multiple times.
